When I was kid I bought 'The Leprechaun' by Chick Corea from a junk shop!
When I got home I put it on and when 'Nite Sprite' came on I was shocked! I couldn't believe a human being could play drums like that.

Now, twenty odd years later kids of the same age just don't seem to get it.
Perhaps the cultural climate does to some extent affect how we percieve skill in a musical context.

To me someone like Mike Portnoy seems derivative, stiff and lacking character where as a lot of my students seem to love his playing, but Tony and Steve sound messy to them.

perhaps, as you get older, this also affects our definition of skill.

There will always be people with opinions we don't agree with as well as people who are 'slightly' or grossly uninformed. Opinions and reality will often collide.

them started getting into the fastest drummer thing and after 30 minutes, these guys were arguing like a newlywed couple spending their first night in a camper with no water or electric connections.

They clearly both either drank or smacked the hippy grass before they got in line and got louder and louder. I had to break in, if for any other reason, these guys were violating my personal standing space and I hate whining arguments from guys!

This thread & the responses are further proof that most youth is synomimous with unbridled energy, vitality, & the opins that emerge from such; but not so with regards to knowledgeable intelligence arrived via experience AWA acquired information over time, & understanding, as a result.

Tad bit pretentious is the title of the topic.

It's not really news that not everyone thinks Steve Gadd is a hip drummer. The only news to me was that i thought everyone already knew that not everyone thinks that.

What is interesting is the subjective and ephemeral nature of musical ability.

Some people think Gadd is a musical genius and others don't; nobody and everybody is right ofcourse.

The only way we could measure how truly great a musician is would be to compare him with the absolute, perfect musician. (where do they live?)

First of all, if someone were to say 'Gadd cannot groove,' I would call that an opin, & a shaky, untrue one at best. [Actually, I would think that person had no idea what they were talking about. That may be my opin, but that doesn't mean it isn't true!] [img]tongue.gif[/img]

We could sit here all day & "do the dance," debating semantics, rhetoric, definitions of nouns or [ad]verbs [what is "groove," "musicality"], 'circular logic/reasoning,' personal philosophies, & this & that, but when it comes down to it there are true statements, AWA there are matters of opin, which may or may not be true.

Now, if someone were to say, "I don't prefer SG's way of grooving, or musical statements," or whatnot, then that's fine, & true to one's own.

But to make blanket statements about SG being a terrible drummer, or can't hold a groove, or isn't musical, or such trot, is just bogus, so I perfer to forget the mental 'hopscotch,' 'twister,' or 'hocus-pocus' in those situations. But I usually realize the person is just trotting out their own dubious haphazard opin,, anyway. [img]tongue.gif[/img] [img]wink.gif[/img]

At any rate, my opin of a statement such as those would be that they were un-enlightened, AWA un-educated! [img]wink.gif[/img]

And that, as 'they' say, is JMO. ;c)

I just think it is silly make it a point of posting wacky comments of others and to be surprized that some people hold opinions that are 'interesting' in light of what is commonly held as being a standard of what is 'true'.

I am not surprized that people think Steve Gadd sucks... you wanna surprize me, show me the election numbers for last year's election for the President... now THAT still surprizes me.
